Did you know that ice skating dates back over 5,000 years? Originally developed as a means of travel, skating for recreation and sport became popular around the fifteenth century. Today, there are hundreds of ice rinks across the country. Celebrate the winter season and check out these ice skating spots near our downtown Dallas apartments:
Galleria Dallas Ice Skating Center
Surrounded by dozens of shops, the Galleria Dallas Ice Skating Center offers a truly unique experience. When the center opened in 1982, Olympic Champion, Dorothy Hamill, took to the ice. Since that time, more Olympic champions have performed here than any other venue in Texas. The rink offers daily public skate sessions and is usually open until at least 10:00 p.m.
Skaters of all ages and abilities can also enjoy classes led by talented instructors. They’re a fun way to exercise while at the same time learning new skills.
NYTEX Sports Centre
Called a premier skating and entertainment destination, the NYTEX Sports Centre is home to the Texas Brahmas professional hockey team. It spans an impressive 140,000 square feet and offers year-round public skate sessions. Visitors can skate daily at lunchtime, and grab a bite to eat afterward at the onsite ZuRoma restaurant. Friday evenings from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. bring a more lively session set to music.
Panther Island Ice
An annual tradition, Panther Island Ice opens for the season on November 22nd. This outdoor rink sits under a large pavilion and welcomes skaters through January 20th. Visitors enjoy views of the Coyote Drive-In and also find seating areas featuring heaters and a full menu complete with beer and wine offerings.
